Integrated Data Strategy & Power BI Audit
A lot of organizations have implemented Power BI as a modern replacement for Excel reporting. The initial gain is often visual, but the fundamental value —better decision-making and process optimization— often fails to materialize. The technology works, but the figures are disputed, the strategy is disconnected from the data, or the team simply doesn’t work with it.
This audit isn’t just a check; it’s an intervention. A 5-Dimensional Framework is used to bridge the gap between having data and creating value. Supported by a team of Power BI and visualization experts, we validate not only whether the dashboards are technically sound, but also whether they provide the right answers to the organization’s strategic questions, whether people understand them, and whether the data behind them is reliable.
This process answers the question: “Are you getting the most out of your data investment, and what do you need to do to achieve that?”

The 5-dimensional framework
The environment is not tested as an IT project, but as a strategic asset.

Strategic fit (business alignment)
Does the data support your course and key success factors? We often see “reports for the sake of reporting.” The dashboards are checked to ensure they actually address the strategic objectives.
- The Check: Are the KPIs Actionable (management information) or Vanity (just for show)?
- The Result: Reports that are directly linked to the annual plan, key KPIs, and profit targets.

Organizational culture & adoption (people)
Is your team using the tools, or are they stuck in Excel? Even the best technology fails without the right culture. The team’s Data Literacy is measured and resistance is identified.
- The Check: Why do employees export data to Excel? Where does the lack of trust or knowledge lie?
- The Result: Concrete advice on how to move from “must” to “want.”

User Experience & Design (UX - user interface)
Can your dashboard be understood in 5 seconds? An unreadable dashboard leads to incorrect decisions. Reports are tested against standards such as the IBCS (International Business Communication Standards).
- The Check: The “Squint Test”: Is the core message visible without reading the details? Is there “Chart Junk” (unnecessary decoration)?
- The Result: A clean, professional design that draws attention directly to anomalies and opportunities.

Data governance & quality
Can you blindly trust the truth? If Sales and Finance present different figures, decision-making stops. The “Single Source of Truth” is checked.
- The Check: Who owns the data? How is security (Row-Level Security) arranged? Is the environment GDPR-compliant?
- The Result: Guaranteed security and a single, indisputable truth for the entire organization.

Technology & architecture
Is the engine under the hood powerful enough? Slow reports kill usability. They delve deeply into the code (DAX/M) and the data model.
- The Check: Are there any slowing factors in the model? Are you paying unnecessary high license fees (Pro vs. Premium/Fabric)?
- The Result: A fast, scalable environment ready for AI and growth, often with lower monthly costs.
Why this approach unique is
Most audits get bogged down in technical details. This approach distinguishes itself by its integrated view of both business operations and technology.
✅ Business first, technology follows. The analysis doesn’t start with the tables, but with the business problem. Data is approached as a means to drive profit and efficiency, not as an end in itself.
✅ Focus on the human factor. The best technology fails without the right culture. Where other audits stop at the software, here the human side (adoption, skills, and resistance) is made measurable.
✅ Objective breakthrough. As an independent party, internal political discussions about data ownership and definitions are cut short. We take a fresh, objective look, avoiding corporate blindness.
How does the process work? (5 weeks)
A pragmatic approach is taken without disrupting daily operations.
Week 1: Intake & Strategy
- Interview with Management/MT. What are the strategic priorities? Controlling access to the environment.
Week 2-3: The ‘Deep Dive’
- Remote technical analysis (Performance & Security). UX review of the dashboards. End-user interviews (Culture).
Week 4: Analysis & Roadmap
- Translation of the findings into a clear Master Service Plan. Not a thick tome, but action points.
Week 5: Delivery
- Presentation to management. Prioritizing the action list and handing over the roadmap.
The result: the master service plan
After 5 weeks, you’ll receive a complete package that allows you to take immediate action:
- The Strategic Audit Report: A clear analysis of the current maturity of the data organization, including a risk analysis and strategic recommendations.
- The Quick Wins Action List: A concrete list of technical and process improvements that will take less than a day, but will immediately deliver speed or insight.
- Strategic Roadmap: A phased plan for the next 12 months (Restructuring -> Professionalization -> Innovation).
Support for implementation
A strategic plan is only valuable when it’s translated into action. Because every organization has different capabilities and expertise, support for implementing the roadmap is flexible. There are three ways to collaborate on achieving the objectives:
Option 1: done with you (co-creation & coaching)
Ideal if there’s an internal data analyst or Power BI Champion who needs guidance.
In this model, the team works side-by-side with the organization. The expert develops the complex architecture and strategy, while employees learn how to build and maintain the reports.
- What does it entail? Weekly work sessions, code reviews of DAX formulas, and on-the-job training.
- The advantage: Knowledge is immediately embedded within the organization, and internal skills (data literacy) are improved.
Option 2: done for you (project realization)
Ideal for complex technical challenges or a lack of internal capacity.
Specific components of the roadmap are tackled as a defined project. This could include building a complex financial data model, implementing Row-Level Security, or completely redesigning the management dashboard.
- What does it entail? You provide the specifications, and a ready-to-use, tested, and documented product is delivered.
- The advantage: Fast results and guaranteed quality without burdening your own team.
Option 3: support & management
Ideal for ad-hoc questions and periodic checks.
After the audit and initial improvements, a safety net is often needed. A flexible hourly model allows for on-demand support.
- What does it entail? Assistance with unexpected error messages, validating KPIs or data, or a quarterly check on governance rules.
- The advantage: Continuity and assurance that the environment will remain stable, without fixed high monthly costs.
Maximize your ROI and ensure continuous improvement
Data analysis isn’t a one-time project, but a continuous process of value creation. By choosing an audit now, you lay the foundation for a directly measurable Return on Investment (ROI). We not only identify immediate cost savings through license optimization and the elimination of inefficient processes, but also map out a clear strategic development path.
This transforms your Power BI environment from a static reporting tool to a dynamic platform that grows with your organization. You build a foundation ready for the next steps, such as the integration of AI (Copilot) and predictive analytics. Take the step today to truly realize the return on your data investments and ensure long-term quality.
Frequently asked questions
How much does this audit cost?
We don’t work with an hourly rate. A fixed project price (Fixed Fee) applies to this process. The amount depends on the complexity of the environment (such as the number of reports and users). A clear quote is agreed upon upfront, so you know exactly what to expect and won’t encounter any surprises later.
Is this path also suitable if there is already an IT partner?
Yes. The audit serves as an independent quality control (second opinion). A regular IT partner often focuses on “keeping things running” (Technology), while here the focus is on “adding value” (Strategy & UX). Collaboration with the current partner is preferred to improve the quality.
What if Power BI isn't being used yet?
Then this is the perfect starting point. The audit can be converted into a “Data Strategy Start Scan,” using the 5 dimensions to map readiness and needs. This prevents common mistakes during implementation.
Does the audit include training?
The audit itself is an analysis. However, the Roadmap often includes specific training recommendations (e.g., “In-company training for Analysts” or “Dashboard Reading Workshop for Managers”).
